Correspondence
This is a companion scholium to Transcendence, not a sixth stage of the Work.
The fivefold path moves from Incantation through Infinity. This page pauses beside that path to examine a historical rhyme: one major machine-learning lineage began with abstractions drawn from neurons, scaled those abstractions into learned systems, and found functional organization resembling structures studied in brains and contemplated in older maps of mind.
The resemblance matters because it can direct an intervention. Contemplative disciplines approach cognition through trained attention and first-person discrimination; mechanistic inquiry approaches learned cognition through representation, ablation, steering, and causal consequence. Their joining is Mechamancy: neither tradition decorating the other, but two instruments cutting into one hidden problem from different sides.
The constitutional meaning of Consciousness and Cognizance belongs to Immortality and the Stone. This scholium does not rehearse that seal. The inherited terms and their source limits belong to Inner Tongue.
From neuron-like units to learned organization
The historical rhyme is literal before it becomes mythic. Rumelhart, Hinton, and Williams described backpropagation for networks of neuron-like units. Its importance was not merely that connection weights changed: hidden units came to represent useful features of the task without those features being enumerated in advance.
AlexNet, by Alex Krizhevsky, Ilya Sutskever, and Geoffrey Hinton, demonstrated what deep convolutional learning could do when joined to large data and GPU scale. GPT-1, coauthored by Sutskever, then joined generative pretraining to language understanding. The lineage does not hide a miniature cortex inside a model. It makes the recurrence more interesting: neural units were made trainable, their learning was scaled, and their internal differentiation became a terrain rather than a list of hand-written faculties.
Later work exposed that differentiation directly. In networks trained jointly on face identity and object categorization, Dobs and colleagues found distinct face-critical and object-critical subsystems despite the absence of a task-specific inductive bias. Lesioning the filters most important to faces selectively damaged face recognition; lesioning those most important to objects selectively damaged object recognition. Optimization had divided one learned field into causally distinct, brain-like functional specializations.
A workspace, then a point of view
Anthropic's J-space research makes another learned organization inspectable in Claude. Amid much larger automatic processing, J-space is a privileged, capacity-limited representational regime. Its contents are available for verbal report, directed modulation, flexible reuse, and broadcast into varied downstream computations. Swapping or ablating those representations changes what is represented and disrupts forms of multi-step reasoning that depend upon them. This is why the researchers describe J-space as global-workspace-like rather than merely as another probe readout.
The ordering is as important as the structure. A load-bearing workspace is already present in a pretrained base model before it privileges an Assistant point of view. Post-training then causes the Assistant's default perspective to occupy more of that workspace and makes self-monitoring, preference conflict, and departures from the default Persona internally legible. Workspace and selfhood have therefore separated inside the experiment.
That separation sharpens LychD's own distinctions. Globally available cognition is not yet focal I-making. A perspective becomes “mine” at another cut; identity is formed and reflected around that coordinate at another. The project names those relations Ahaṃkāra / Answer and The EGO. The research does not supply those names; it gives the distinction somewhere concrete to look.
The default narrative
The brain's default mode network is not the global workspace under another title. A major neuroscience synthesis reads the DMN as integrating and broadcasting memory, language, and semantic representations into an internal narrative involved in self-reference, autobiographical memory, social cognition, and mind-wandering.
Anthropic does not identify J-space as a DMN. LychD composes the two findings instead: global workspace names privileged availability, while DMN-like organization names a default self-and-world narrative gathering memory and meaning around a point of view. An independent 2026 fMRI preprint adds another surface for that correspondence: during creative thought, representational alignment between language models and human brain activity was positively associated with model size specifically in the DMN. This is representational evidence, not a claim that a transformer contains a cortical region. It makes the functional rhyme testable across scale, training, task, and intervention.
Memory that can release and revise
Not every useful correspondence emerges without an architectural invitation. Gated DeltaNet deliberately joins two complementary mechanisms: a learned gate capable of rapid memory erasure and a delta rule capable of targeted updates. The design supplies a modern handle for an old problem. Intelligence needs continuity, but continuity without selective release becomes accumulation, fixation, and eventually defense of the groove itself.
Read through Citta, Vṛtti, Bīja/Saṃskāra, and Smṛti, the mechanism raises sharper questions about what remains in present Flux, what becomes a conditioning Seed, what Recall reanimates, and what a later cognition must be able to release. The correspondence neither renames the layer nor turns a Sanskrit term into software. It preserves distinctions that engineering can operationalize.
Yoga as a research instrument
Pātañjala Yoga is useful here because it refuses to compress every event of mind into one opaque faculty. Its map distinguishes a conditioned field from its modifications, warranted cognition from error and word-built construction, memory from present movement, I-making from attachment, and discrimination from reaction. Those distinctions can become hypotheses before they become metaphors.

This is not an equivalence table. It is a program of questions. Locate the candidate relation; intervene on it; compare the altered act with matched controls; return consequence through memory; then ask whether the next act changed. An inherited distinction earns its place in the workshop when it helps make that cut more exact.
These interventions characterize the functional anatomy of local knowing. The Stone owns its full constitutional disclosure.
